National Geographic names León Carnival photo of the month

A photograph by Carlos Cantón de Celis featuring the ‘guirrio’ character from the Carnival of Llamas de la Ribera in León has been selected as National Geographic’s photograph of the month for September 2026.

The image captures the traditional figure wearing a ceremonial headpiece known as a ‘mázcara’ during the Antruejo celebrations. This local tradition in the Alto Órbigo region has been recognized as a Provincial Festival of Tourist Interest since 2002.

Cantón de Celis, a photographer originally from León, captured the scene using a Nikon D850. This marks his third such recognition from the publication.
