National Guard maintains long-term deployment in Washington, D.C

Thousands of National Guard soldiers remain deployed in Washington, D.C., as part of a long-term security presence under the Trump administration. While originally framed as an emergency response to a crime crisis, the Pentagon has indicated the deployment could remain in place until January 20, 2029.

Approximately 4,500 troops are currently stationed in the capital, outnumbering the city’s roughly 3,200 police officers. These personnel perform various duties, including patrolling metro stations and parks, supporting arrest operations, and participating in municipal tasks such as snow removal and beautification projects.

The deployment carries significant costs. Estimates suggest the operation has cost taxpayers billions, with recent plans including $292 million for troop lodging and $1 billion for White House security upgrades. A review of criminal court records suggests the military's impact on serious crime may be limited; National Guard involvement was noted in only about 1.3% of criminal cases filed since the deployment began. While the White House maintains the presence has improved quality of life and reduced crime, critics question whether the deployment is an effective crime-fighting strategy or a demonstration of government authority.
