National Guard member shot in Washington, D.C. fight

A National Guard member and a suspect were wounded during a shooting in Southeast Washington, D.C., late Sunday night. The incident occurred around 11:10 p.m. in the Eastern Market neighborhood of Capitol Hill.

According to Metropolitan Police Department interim Chief Jeffery Carroll, a group of seven to eight National Guard members in a van observed a fight on a sidewalk and exited their vehicle to intervene. During the confrontation, a suspect allegedly pulled out a firearm and began shooting. After Guard members ordered the individual to drop the weapon, the suspect reportedly fired at them, prompting three members to return fire.

The National Guard member sustained a gunshot wound to the leg, while the suspect was struck in the abdomen. Both individuals were transported to local hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect was taken into custody at the scene.

The shooting follows a period of National Guard deployment in the capital, initiated by President Donald Trump in August 2025 to address violent crime. While the administration maintains the deployment has aided safety, local officials and residents have debated the impact and necessity of the military presence in the city.
