National Guard presence in Washington, D.C. continues amid cost and crime concerns

The federal presence in Washington, D.C., remains high one year after the Trump administration deployed National Guard troops as part of the ‘Make D.C. Safe and Beautiful’ initiative. Currently, approximately 5,000 personnel from 15 states are stationed in the district, a deployment projected to cost taxpayers an additional $1.4 billion by January 2029.

An analysis by the Center for American Progress suggests the deployment has not significantly impacted violent crime rates. Critics note that National Guard members lack ‘civil policing’ training and do not have arrest authority. The daily cost of the National Guard presence is estimated at $3 million.

In response to the ongoing federal occupancy, local Black youth have begun organizing protests to voice frustrations regarding mistreatment by federal and local law enforcement. Working with the advocacy group Free DC, demonstrators have highlighted the negative impacts of the security measures and criticized local officials for implementing youth curfews rather than addressing systemic issues.
