National Health Insurance Authority refunds N14.2m and suspends nine hospitals

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has refunded over N14.2 million to enrollees and suspended nine healthcare facilities following complaints regarding services provided under the national health insurance system.

During a review of Nigeria’s national health sector reforms in Abuja, NHIA Director-General and CEO Dr. Kelechi Ohiri announced that the agency resolved 3,878 complaints and issued 368 warning letters to healthcare providers. To ensure compliance with quality-of-care requirements and a one-hour treatment authorisation policy, inspection teams have been deployed to various facilities.

NHIA reports that national health insurance enrolment has grown from approximately 16 million to over 23 million under the current administration. Additionally, more than 2.7 million vulnerable Nigerians have received support through the Basic Health Care Provision Fund. Recent reforms have led to a 93 per cent increase in capitation and a 378 per cent rise in fee-for-service reimbursements.
