National Health Mission issues snakebite emergency advisory

The National Health Mission in Uttar Pradesh has issued an advisory regarding snakebites, emphasizing that the first hour after a bite is critical for medical intervention. This advisory comes amid increased snake sightings in homes, fields, and roads during the monsoon season.

Key symptoms of a snakebite include two puncture marks, bleeding from the wound, difficulty breathing, changes in skin color or voice, and swelling, burning, or intense pain at the site. The advisory urges victims to seek immediate medical assistance at the nearest government medical center.

The World Health Organization (WHO) identifies anti-venom as an effective treatment to mitigate the effects of venom. Recommended first aid includes removing tight items like watches or rings from the affected limb to accommodate swelling, keeping the victim calm and still, and avoiding traditional herbal remedies or unverified treatments. Paracetamol may be used for local pain management.
