Public health developments in Dominican Republic and Guatemala
In the Dominican Republic, the National Health Service (SNS) reported significant advancements in the public health network under the administration of President Luis Abinader. Director Julio Landrón highlighted investments in infrastructure, technology, and specialized services, noting that 118 hospital interventions and the renovation of over 1,100 primary care centers have been completed. Between January and August 2026, 14 hospitals were renovated to improve emergency services and capacity. Data shows that through July 2026, the network provided over 36 million health services, including 18.5 million laboratory tests and 2.8 million imaging studies.
In Guatemala, the government has appointed Carlos Enrique Santa Cruz Hernández as the Vice Minister of Primary Health Care within the Ministry of Public Health and Social Assistance (MSPAS). An economist with expertise in applied statistics and epidemiology, Santa Cruz Hernández brings over seven years of experience in public health and integrated service networks. This appointment follows the recent designation of Susana Cojón as Administrative and Financial Vice Minister.
