National Highways launches A46 Newark Bypass consultation amid funding reviews

National Highways has launched a preliminary market engagement notice for the £700m A46 Newark Bypass project in Nottinghamshire, despite the scheme being under review for potential cancellation.

The project, which involves widening the existing carriageway and constructing a new dual carriageway, a bridge over the A1, and a flyover at the Cattle Market roundabout, follows the cancellation of a previous contract with Skanska UK in June. This cancellation occurred shortly before Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced plans to reduce road investment by £700m to support increased defence spending.

The Department for Transport (DfT) is currently considering responses from a consultation regarding potential reductions to the third Road Investment Strategy (RIS3), which includes the A46 Newark Bypass. National Highways stated that the current notice is for market consultation purposes only and does not guarantee future procurement. A tender is expected to be published in July 2025, with a 10-year contract potentially commencing in December 2028.
