United States celebrates National Hispanic Heritage Month

National Hispanic Heritage Month is observed annually in the United States from September 15 to October 15. The observance honors the diverse cultures, histories, and contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans.

The timing of the celebration coincides with the independence anniversaries of several Latin American nations, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua on September 15, as well as Mexico on September 16 and Chile on September 18.

Historically, the commemoration began as Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968 under President Lyndon B. Johnson and was later expanded to a full month in 1988 during the administration of Ronald Reagan. Today, the month serves as a platform to recognize the significant demographic, economic, and social impact of the Hispanic community, which comprises a substantial portion of the U.S. population.
