National Hospital for Tropical Diseases treats critical Whitmore disease case

Doctors at the National Hospital for Tropical Diseases in Vietnam have successfully treated a 54-year-old male driver suffering from a critical case of Whitmore disease. The patient, originally from Ninh Binh and working in Phu Quoc, presented with high fever and headaches before experiencing facial seizures and loss of consciousness.

Medical examinations and blood cultures identified the presence of Burkholderia pseudomallei, the bacterium responsible for Whitmore disease. The patient's condition was severely complicated by neurological damage, including lesions in the thalamus and cerebral cortex, as well as extreme hyperglycemia and electrolyte imbalances.

Due to the severity of his condition, the patient required intubation and mechanical ventilation. After nearly a month of intensive treatment to manage the infection and metabolic disorders, his condition has significantly improved, though he requires continued monitoring and blood sugar control.
