National Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology performs high-risk delivery
Doctors at the National Hospital of Obstetrics and Gynecology in Vietnam successfully performed a cesarean section on a 26-year-old woman with achondroplasia. Standing at 1.2 meters tall, the patient faced significant medical challenges due to her bone structure and genetic condition.
The pregnancy was classified as high-risk because the patient's small pelvic structure made natural childbirth difficult. Additionally, as the fetus grew, the expanding uterus threatened to compress her diaphragm, increasing the risk of respiratory failure due to her limited thoracic volume.
Anesthesia also presented complications; the patient's spinal abnormalities made airway control and spinal anesthesia difficult, requiring precise dosing to avoid hypotension or respiratory suppression. The procedure resulted in the safe birth of a 2.7kg baby girl. Medical experts noted that because achondroplasia is an autosomal dominant condition, the child will require ongoing genetic monitoring and evaluation.
