National Human Rights Commission Chairperson faces audit scrutiny

During a National Assembly audit of the National Human Rights Commission of Korea (NHRCK), Chairperson Ahn Chang-ho addressed allegations of selective agenda setting. Representative Kim Yun of the Democratic Party accused Ahn of prioritizing agendas favorable to his position while delaying those that were unfavorable, specifically citing the handling of recommendations regarding presidential defense rights versus martial law recommendations.

Ahn denied the allegations, stating that certain delays were due to the unprecedented nature of the issues, the need for legal and political neutrality reviews, and scheduling conflicts. He maintained that the commission's decisions were based on thorough deliberation rather than bias.

Additionally, Representative Jung Jeom-sik of the People Power Party questioned the year-long delay in the promotion of seven NHRCK staff members. While the promotions were eventually finalized in October, Jung raised concerns regarding whether the Presidential Office had blocked the appointments due to the Chairperson's previous administration ties. Ahn expressed hope for more prompt presidential appointments for the commission's personnel in the future.
