National Institute of Biological Resources opens halophyte exhibition

The National Institute of Biological Resources has launched a special exhibition titled ‘Plants Blooming on Salt’ in Incheon, South Korea. Running from September 11 until March 2027, the exhibition aims to highlight the value and importance of tidal flat ecosystems by showcasing halophytes—plants that thrive in saline soil—and the organisms that live in organic relationship with them.

The exhibition features 26 species of halophytes, including large-scale models of species such as Suaeda japonica and Salicornia. Visitors can view realistic videos of plant colonies and tidal flat life created using generative AI. The display also includes specimens of fish like mudskippers, invertebrates such as crabs and clams, and birds like the black-faced spoonbill.

Supported by various organizations including POSCO E&C, the Korea Coast Guard, World Vision, and the Incheon Port Authority, the event emphasizes biodiversity conservation and habitat restoration. Interactive digital experiences allow visitors to simulate planting halophytes to learn about ecosystem preservation. Admission and parking are free.
