National Institute of Migration detention center fire in Janos sparks rights concerns
The Jesuit Network with Migrants Mexico (RJM Mex) has denounced the recent fire at the National Institute of Migration (INM) provisional station in Janos as a predictable event. The fire, which occurred on the night of September 12 in the men's housing area, forced the evacuation of 33 foreign nationals.
RJM Mex reported that the facility had long suffered from inadequate housing conditions and that detainees were being held for up to 15 days. This practice contradicts a March 2023 ruling by Mexico's Supreme Court of Justice (SCJN), which declared such prolonged administrative detentions unconstitutional, noting that the maximum legitimate period for administrative deprivation of liberty is 36 hours.
In a separate incident in Yucatán, an undocumented foreign national was transferred to the INM offices in Mérida following an inspection at a checkpoint in Teya. The operation was conducted by INM personnel with security support from the Mexican Navy.
