National Institute of Neurology faces critical medical supply shortages

The National Institute of Neurology and Neurovascular Diseases in Bucharest is facing a critical shortage of essential medical supplies due to significant funding reductions. Dr. Alexandru Dimancea, a specialist in interventional neuroradiology, reported that the facility has received only one-quarter of the funding allocated for acute ischemic stroke treatment compared to the previous year.

This financial crisis has led to severe operational disruptions. The medical team has occasionally been unable to perform thrombectomies—procedures to remove blood clots from cerebral vasculature—due to a lack of aspiration catheters. In some instances, supplies have had to be borrowed from providers to maintain services.

Furthermore, the shortage of platinum coils used to treat aneurysms has resulted in waiting lists for patients. This includes individuals with large aneurysms who face high risks, as the lack of necessary devices prevents timely surgical intervention.
