National Investigation Agency probes Tamil secessionist social media activity
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has assumed control of an investigation into the online propagation of Tamil secessionist ideology. The probe follows a directive from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs due to potential national security implications.
The case, originally registered by Tiruverambur police in the Tiruchy district, involves allegations that an individual used social media platforms, including Instagram and Facebook, to promote the banned Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) and the Tamil Nadu Liberation Army (TNLA). The accused is alleged to have advocated for a separate sovereign nation comprising Tamil Nadu and northern Sri Lanka.
Investigators are examining whether these social media accounts were used to indoctrinate youth and revive defunct organizations like the TNLA. The case has been filed under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
