National Kaohsiung Normal University faces dormitory and leadership scrutiny
National Kaohsiung Normal University (NKNU) is facing scrutiny over poor dormitory conditions and allegations regarding the conduct of its president, Wang Cheng-yen. Students have highlighted severe issues in campus housing, including leaking walls, mold, rusted bed frames, and even the growth of fungi in some corners. These conditions led to the university's dormitories being voted as the worst in Taiwan in a social media poll.
In addition to the housing concerns, President Wang has been accused of frequenting late-night banquets, which allegedly resulted in excessive overtime for university drivers. Records indicated one driver accumulated over 500 overtime hours during a seven-month period, partly due to transporting the president to various high-end dining venues.
President Wang has denied these allegations, stating that the dining engagements were official business and that the overtime records provided were inaccurate. The university noted that after reviewing the driver's claims, they adjusted the approved overtime pay significantly downward. Regarding the dormitories, the university acknowledged the facilities are over 40 years old and announced that 220 million TWD has been approved for seismic reinforcement and environmental improvements.
