National Labor Relations Board shifts to Republican majority
The U.S. Senate has confirmed two nominees to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), shifting the agency to a 3-1 Republican majority. The confirmed members are Republican James Macy and Democrat David Prouty, who was reconfirmed for a second term to maintain the Board’s necessary three-member quorum.
The current Board composition includes Chairman James R. Murphy (R), Scott A. Mayer (R), David Prouty (D), and James Macy (R). One position on the five-member board remains vacant.
With this new majority, the Board is expected to review and potentially overturn several precedents established under the previous Democratic-majority Board. Key decisions under scrutiny include the Cemex ruling regarding bargaining orders, the Amazon decision concerning captive audience meetings, and the Stericycle standard for workplace rules. Additionally, the Board may revisit the Columbia decision, which classifies graduate workers as employees under the National Labor Relations Act, and the Valley Hospital Medical Center II decision regarding dues checkoff agreements.
