National Library and Archives NZ faces proposed workforce cuts

The National Library and Archives NZ is facing significant government spending cuts that could result in the loss of approximately 47 full-time equivalent positions. The Public Service Association (PSA) warns that this restructure represents a 12% reduction in the workforce. If implemented, the total staff count would be 15% smaller than it was two years ago.

In addition to the workforce reductions, the agency is facing a government mandate to cut spending by 10%. Officials at the agency have admitted to staff that these cuts will likely impact service levels.

The PSA has expressed strong opposition to the proposal, stating that the cuts put the preservation of and access to millions of historical items at risk. Concerns include a growing cataloguing backlog and a diminished capacity to perform critical work required under legislation.
