National minority deputy prefects meet in Čakovec to discuss rights

The second regular coordination meeting for deputy prefects representing national minorities was held in Čakovec, hosted by Elvis Kralj, the deputy prefect of Međimurje County from the Roma community. The meeting brought together deputy prefects from nine Croatian counties to discuss the protection of legally guaranteed minority rights.

Key discussion topics included the status of the Roma community and the upcoming elections for minority councils and representatives scheduled for May next year. Participants also analyzed the implementation of the Constitutional Act on the Rights of National Minorities, noting significant progress in rights improvements but highlighting persistent issues, particularly regarding employment. Specifically, the meeting addressed the application of Article 22, which grants preference in state and public service employment to members of national minorities.

Representatives from the Ministry of Justice, Administration and Digital Transformation attended, announcing plans to conduct educational sessions regarding minority elections in every county starting this autumn. Međimurje County Prefect Matija Posavec emphasized that including minority representatives in executive structures is essential for identifying local needs and ensuring that state institutions do not make decisions without consulting those directly affected.
