National Museum of Fine Arts hosts seminar on women in art and science

The National Museum of Fine Arts (MNBA) in Rio de Janeiro is hosting a free seminar titled ‘Art and Science: Possible Dialogues — Women, Art and Science: Feminist Substantives’. The event, organized by Fundação Cecierj in partnership with the museum, is part of the 23rd National Science and Technology Week.

The seminar focuses on the historical invisibility of women in scientific and artistic production, addressing gender and racial inequalities in the construction of knowledge. Programming includes debate panels, practical workshops, and guided tours of the exhibition ‘The Brazilian Abolitionists’.

Key discussions include the ‘Matilda Effect’, which refers to the undervaluation or non-recognition of women's scientific achievements, and sessions regarding sexism and racism in the arts and sciences. Workshops will cover topics such as memory, ancestry, textile arts, and cinema.
