National Museum of History celebrates 82nd anniversary
The National Museum of History, located in Mexico City’s Chapultepec Castle, is celebrating its 82nd anniversary. To mark the occasion, the institution has organized a series of cultural activities titled “Galas por el 82 aniversario del MNH,” which include concerts, lectures, and dance performances.
The museum, which is part of the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), has a long and varied history. The Chapultepec Castle itself was originally commissioned in 1785 as a viceregal palace. Over the centuries, the site has served as a military college, an imperial residence for Maximilian I and Carlota, an astronomical observatory, and the home of various Mexican presidents. The building was officially decreed as the site for the National Museum of History by President Lázaro Cárdenas in February 1939.
Scheduled commemorative events include discussions on feminist consciousness in Mexico and presentations regarding 19th-century musical instruments and cultural memory. These activities are also held within the framework of the 6th “Felipe Villanueva” National Musical Festival.
