National Museum of Roman Art celebrates 40 years in Mérida
The National Museum of Roman Art in Mérida is celebrating the 40th anniversary of its current headquarters. Designed by architect Rafael Moneo, the brick building officially opened on September 19, 1986, following an inauguration by the Spanish monarchs.
Since its opening, the museum has hosted more than eight million visitors. The institution has seen continuous growth in its cultural and scientific activities and has recently completed an expansion to provide more space and new services.
While the current building is 40 years old, the museum's origins date back to 1838. It transitioned to the status of a National Museum of Roman Art in 1975. The anniversary event included architect Rafael Moneo, museum director Trinidad Nogales, and various regional and local government representatives.
