National Museum of UFRJ to receive R$ 10 million for restoration

Education Minister Leonardo Barchini has announced an additional R$ 10 million investment for the reconstruction and restoration of the National Museum of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). This funding aims to continue recovery efforts following the devastating fire in September 2018, which destroyed approximately 85% of the museum's 20 million items, including fossils, historical documents, and imperial furniture.

Between 2023 and 2026, the Ministry of Education has already invested roughly R$ 68 million in the institution. The museum, which houses Latin America's largest natural science collection, remains an active site for scientific research despite the damage to its historic structures and laboratories.

During his visit to the museum, Barchini also addressed the Pé-de-Meia Universitário program. He confirmed that funding for the initiative, which provides monthly stipends to approximately 485,000 low-income students, is secured through the Pre-Salt Social Fund surplus and the national budget.
