National Nuclear Security Administration faces scrutiny over security and production

The National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) is facing criticism regarding both security protocols and production acceleration within the United States nuclear complex.

In Santa Barbara, California, the operator of the Special Technologies Laboratory, Mission Support and Test Services, LLC (MSTS), has been issued a preliminary violation notice. Federal investigators found that classified information was processed on unauthorized computer systems. One violation received the Department of Energy’s highest severity rating, reserved for incidents involving significant potential threats to national security. The operator faces a proposed fine of $196,350.

Separately, the NNSA is facing pushback over efforts to accelerate the production of plutonium pits, which serve as the cores of thermonuclear weapons. Critics and scientists suggest the NNSA is bypassing fiscal oversight and cutting safety corners to speed up a program that may not be necessitated by the actual aging rate of the current plutonium stockpile. Experts argue that rushing production without mature performance demonstrations or transparent requirements could increase costs and threaten worker and community safety.
