National Nutrition Week promotes healthy eating to combat lifestyle diseases

In observance of National Nutrition Week, held annually from September 1 to September 7, emphasis is being placed on the critical role of nutrition in preventing lifestyle diseases. Modern lifestyle changes, including the consumption of processed junk foods, excessive salt and sugar, and sedentary behavior, have contributed to a rise in hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, and obesity.

To combat these health risks, experts recommend returning to traditional dietary habits, such as consuming millets, leafy greens, vegetables, and fruits. Maintaining regular meal timings and increasing physical activity are also highlighted as essential for long-term health.

In India, the Ministry of Women and Child Development has observed these celebrations since 1982 to raise awareness about nutritional values, hygiene, and safe drinking water. The 2026 theme for National Nutrition Week is ‘Discover the Power of Nutrition,’ aiming to address nutritional imbalances caused by poverty, unemployment, and lack of education.
