National Open University of Nigeria enrolls 36 Ikoyi inmates in degree programmes
The National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) has matriculated 36 inmates at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Ikoyi, Lagos, into various academic programmes. The group includes 25 undergraduate students, nine master’s degree candidates, and two Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) students.
This initiative is part of a collaborative effort between NOUN and the Nigerian Correctional Service to facilitate rehabilitation and reintegration through higher education. Daramola George, the Controller of Corrections for the Lagos State Command, emphasized that access to education is a vital component of the service’s mandate to reform offenders and prepare them for productive lives following their release.
During the ceremony, Professor Inua Ofe, Director of NOUN’s Lagos Study Centre, administered the matriculation oath to the new students. Officials noted that acquiring recognized qualifications can provide inmates with the necessary skills and confidence to contribute positively to society upon their return.
