National Park advocates urge Congress to reauthorize infrastructure funding
Advocates are urging the U.S. Congress to reauthorize critical funding for the nation's national parks to address a $23 billion deferred maintenance backlog. The expiration of the National Parks and Public Land Legacy Restoration Fund last September has placed new infrastructure projects on hold.
Bipartisan legislation known as the ‘America the Beautiful Act’ has been introduced in both the House and Senate. If passed, the act would reauthorize the Legacy Restoration Fund for an additional five years and increase annual funding for the four major land bureaus, including the National Park Service, to $2 billion per year. This funding is intended to repair essential infrastructure such as roads, visitor centers, trails, and restrooms.
