Trump's proposed Washington D.C. arch will harm historic sites

Federal officials have acknowledged that President Donald Trump’s proposed 250-foot triumphal arch in Washington, D.C., will cause unavoidable adverse effects to nearby historic properties. According to documents from the National Park Service, the planned construction at Memorial Circle would impact the visual integrity and commemorative landscape of several landmarks, including the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery.

Despite these findings, the administration intends to proceed with the project, which is intended to mark the United States’ 250th anniversary. The National Park Service noted that the Memorial Circle location is central to the project’s purpose, making relocation difficult. Proposed mitigation efforts include new signage, web pages, and landscape documentation to explain the impact to the public.

While preservationists and veterans have raised concerns regarding the disruption of sacred sightlines and potential impacts on cemetery burials, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has determined that the structure will not pose a hazard to flight operations at Reagan National Airport.
