National Park Service prioritizes White House projects over remote park needs

Internal documents and officials reveal that the National Park Service (NPS) has implemented a three-tier funding system that prioritizes specific White House projects while leaving over 1,500 other projects languishing. Under a "White House priorities" docket established by Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, funds are being fast-tracked for projects such as gilding equestrian statues near Memorial Bridge and installing brick pavers in Lafayette Park.

In contrast, spending for parks outside the Washington D.C. area has reportedly decreased by $854 million, a 68% decline. Delayed projects include archaeological surveys at Camp Nelson National Monument and the installation of wildfire-resistant dumpsters.

Staffers report that the NPS is also facing severe resource shortages due to staffing cuts and buyouts directed by the Department of Government Efficiency, which has left the agency with insufficient personnel to manage routine contracts and operations.
