National Park Service backs Trump’s memorial arch despite sightline impacts
A 133-page report from the National Park Service (NPS) has formally backed President Donald Trump’s proposal to construct a 250-foot (76-meter) gilded memorial arch near the Arlington Memorial Bridge.
The NPS report acknowledges that the structure will have “adverse effects” on the historical significance and visual integrity of dozens of nearby landmarks, including the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Jefferson Memorial. Specifically, the agency noted that the arch would disrupt long-established sightlines and axial alignments, such as the connection between the Lincoln Memorial, the Memorial Bridge, and Arlington House.
Despite these findings, the NPS concluded that the project must proceed at its proposed location in Memorial Circle. The report argues that the project is “inherently location dependent” and that moving the arch to an alternative site would result in a “materially different commemorative project,” making relocation an unreasonable avoidance strategy.
The findings come amid ongoing legal challenges to the project filed by a group of historians and three veterans. The proposed arch is part of a broader series of initiatives by the Trump administration aimed at leaving a lasting physical imprint on the Washington, D.C. landscape.
