National Park Service warns Trump's proposed Washington arch would damage historic sites

The U.S. National Park Service released a Section 106 review identifying 37 historic properties that would be adversely affected by a 250‑foot arch the Trump administration proposes to place in Memorial Circle, a traffic roundabout between the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. The report says the arch would disrupt the visual and symbolic relationship linking the Lincoln Monument with Arlington House, the former home of Confederate General Robert E. Lee, and would diminish the solemn atmosphere of the cemetery.

A group of Vietnam‑War veterans has filed a lawsuit seeking to block the construction, arguing that congressional approval is required and that the arch would constitute a visual affront. The White House maintains that Memorial Circle is an ideal location and that the arch would enhance the visitor experience, despite not having sought the needed legislative clearance.
