New Zealand parties debate climate, KiwiSaver, and housing policies

New Zealand political parties are intensifying their campaign platforms across climate, retirement, and housing sectors. Labour leader Chris Hipkins has announced an urgent review of the Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS) to address low carbon prices and prevent whole-farm conversions to exotic forestry. Hipkins also reaffirmed Labour’s commitment to the Paris Agreement, contrasting this with promises from ACT and NZ First to exit the accord.

In retirement savings, the National Party has proposed a policy to automatically enroll newborns in KiwiSaver with a $1,500 government contribution, a move described as a significant shift from previous positions. This has placed pressure on Labour to respond to National’s positioning on the popular scheme.

Regarding housing, the National Party has pledged to expand the First Home Loan scheme by raising the income cap to $300,000. The proposal aims to replace current tiered limits with a single threshold to assist middle-income earners, such as professionals and young couples, in accessing 5% deposits.
