National Pension Service proposes green bond exceptions for coal companies

A report from the National Pension Service Research Institute suggests a new strategy for managing investments in coal-reliant companies. To avoid simply withdrawing capital and pushing companies to the brink, the report proposes allowing exceptions for companies that issue ‘green bonds’ to fund their transition to eco-friendly energy.

This approach aims to transform the National Pension Service into an ‘ecosystem creator’ that incentivizes carbon reduction rather than just divesting. However, the report emphasizes that strict verification is necessary to prevent ‘greenwashing,’ ensuring that funds are used exclusively for legitimate environmental projects through quantitative and objective reporting.
