National People’s Party faces political shifts in Meghalaya

Political shifts are occurring in Meghalaya as the National People’s Party (NPP) prepares for the Shillong Lok Sabha by-election and faces the departure of a key founding figure.

D Rocklyer Lyngdoh Nonglait, the NPP candidate for the Shillong by-election, is campaigning on the premise that electing an MP aligned with the state government is essential for securing funds and project follow-ups from Delhi. Addressing voters in the West Khasi Hills region, Nonglait emphasized the need for coordination with state leadership to ensure developmental schemes are implemented effectively.

Simultaneously, Dr. WR Kharlukhi, a founding architect of the NPP and former state president, has signaled potential political realignment following his recent resignation. While Kharlukhi stated he is currently stepping back from active politics, he refused to rule out joining a rival party in the future. His departure, submitted to Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, marks a significant change for the party he helped transform into a dominant political force in the state.
