National People’s Party navigates political shifts in Meghalaya

The National People’s Party (NPP) is addressing several developments in Meghalaya. Former party leader and former Rajya Sabha MP Dr. W.R. Kharlukhi has expressed support for Congress candidate Vincent H. Pala, a move that has surprised the NPP leadership. Government spokesperson Wailadmiki Shylla noted that Kharlukhi clarified his backing is for the individual candidate rather than the Congress party itself. Shylla suggested that electoral preferences in the region often transcend party lines.

Separately, Dr. Kharlukhi has criticized the central government regarding the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner, suggesting that the current legal framework lacks sufficient judicial oversight. He expressed concerns that the process should involve the Chief Justice of India to avoid issues seen in previous Special Intensive Revisions.

In local campaigning, the NPP is reporting encouraging turnout at campaign meetings for DR Lyngdoh Nonglait in the ongoing by-election, despite the current harvesting season. The party is also continuing its community engagement through initiatives such as the U Tirot Sing Syiem Academic Awards in the Mylliem constituency to recognize high-achieving students.
