National Petroleum Authority and UMaT discuss Ghana petroleum sector partnership
The National Petroleum Authority (NPA) and the University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) are exploring a partnership aimed at strengthening technical expertise and innovation within Ghana’s downstream petroleum sector.
During discussions held on October 20, 2026, NPA Chief Executive Officer Godwin Kudzo Tameklo emphasized the importance of academic collaboration to drive industry progress through research and innovative problem-solving. The proposed initiative includes internship placements for students in the NPA’s technical departments to provide practical industry experience.
Additional areas of cooperation under discussion include specialized training and secondment opportunities for UMaT faculty, the potential inclusion of the university in the NPA’s proposed Centre of Excellence, and the possible retooling of a laboratory at UMaT. Professor Richard Amorin, Dean of the School of Petroleum Studies at UMaT, expressed optimism that these talks would lead to a formal arrangement to bridge the gap between academic research and industry practice.
