National Preparedness Month encourages disaster readiness

September marks National Preparedness Month, a nationwide initiative to encourage citizens to develop emergency response plans. In Wisconsin, Governor Tony Evers has officially declared the month to help residents prepare for various potential disasters.

Wisconsin Emergency Management Administrator Greg Engle emphasized that preparedness provides individuals with the best chance to overcome disasters. Officials recommend that residents identify local risks, establish communication plans to reconnect with loved ones, and prepare emergency kits containing essential supplies like water, nonperishable food, and first-aid items.

In East Texas, local leaders and the Better Business Bureau are also highlighting the importance of readiness due to risks from thunderstorms, tornadoes, flooding, and extreme heat. Recommendations include signing up for emergency alerts, utilizing the FEMA app for real-time notifications, and practicing evacuation routes. FEMA suggests twelve specific ways to prepare, including safeguarding documents, practicing drills, and planning with neighbors to increase community resilience.
