National Prescription Drug Take Back Day set for October 24
The 31st National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is scheduled for October 24, 2026. This initiative, coordinated by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and various local agencies, provides a free and anonymous way for residents to dispose of unused or expired medications to prevent misuse and accidental poisoning.
In Gloucester, Massachusetts, the local police and health departments will host a collection event from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Rose Baker Center for Aging Well. The Gloucester Health Department will also offer free Narcan and training on overdose response. While prescription and over-the-counter medications are accepted, items such as syringes, IV bags, and inhalers are not.
In Hawaiʻi, residents of Maui, Lānaʻi, Molokaʻi, and Hawaiʻi Island can utilize 24/7 anonymous drop-off boxes located at Maui County police stations. Drive-through collection sites are also planned for Oʻahu and Kauaʻi. Accepted items include tablets, capsules, and liquids, even in original labeled containers, though syringes with needles are excluded from collection.
