National Rally of Independents sues over AI-generated images targeting Fatima Kheir

The National Rally of Independents (RNI) party in Morocco has announced legal action following the circulation of AI-generated fabricated images targeting MP and actress Fatima Kheir and actor Benaisa El Jerrari.

The controversy began when an artificial intelligence-generated image depicting the two in an intimate pose was shared on social media platforms. Abdelbari Boutgrassa, a prominent member of the Justice and Development Party (PJD) in Tangier, reportedly shared the image on Threads, characterizing it as reality. Although Boutgrassa later posted an apology, he subsequently edited the post to remove it, leaving the accusation standing.

Salma Benaziz, the official spokesperson for the RNI, stated that the party will pursue judicial proceedings against anyone proven responsible for producing, publishing, or promoting the fake content. She emphasized that while the party respects freedom of expression and political criticism, such rights do not cover defamation or the use of disinformation to damage personal dignity and honor. The party noted that these practices undermine the integrity of democratic electoral debate.
