National Resistance Park in Thessaloniki designated historical site

The National Resistance Park in the Neapoli-Sykies municipality of Thessaloniki has been officially designated as a historical site. This decision was made by the Minister of Culture, Lina Mendoni, following a unanimous opinion from the Central Council of Modern Monuments.

The designation follows the discovery of mass graves and human remains during renovation works at the park. These findings are described as a significant aspect of the recent history of Thessaloniki and Greece, linking the site to the memory of executions during a critical period of modern Greek history.

The Ministry of Culture will protect the area under the provisions of Law 4858/2021 regarding the protection of antiquities and cultural heritage. Minister Mendoni emphasized that the site serves as a bearer of history, memory, and identity, noting that the discovery is a historical testament to a turbulent era rather than a traditional archaeological find.
