National Revenue Authority leadership and new port procedures in Sierra Leone

Abu Martin Kanneh, the new Commissioner General of Sierra Leone’s National Revenue Authority (NRA), has pledged to prioritize teamwork, transparency, and closing revenue gaps. Kanneh, a veteran of the agency, notably became the first public appointee in the country's history to voluntarily declare his and his family’s assets during the vetting process. His leadership agenda focuses on addressing leakages in the informal sector and improving GST compliance through increased public awareness and employee engagement.

In a related operational move, the NRA has introduced new procedures for Sunday container exits at the Queen Elizabeth II Quay. To facilitate trade, importers and exporters must now notify the Commissioner General at least 48 hours in advance for Sunday operations. Required documentation includes bills of lading, commercial invoices, and payment receipts. The NRA advised that notifications should be submitted by noon on the Friday preceding the scheduled Sunday work, with priority given to operators managing 30 or more containers.
