National Road Safety Authority announces new towing and driver regulations

The National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) in Ghana has announced several new initiatives aimed at improving road safety. Starting next year, a compulsory towing regime will be implemented, requiring vehicle owners to have arrangements in place for the removal of broken-down vehicles. Director-General Abraham Amaliba stated that motorists must subscribe to a towing or insurance company to ensure disabled vehicles are removed quickly from roads to prevent traffic obstructions and crash risks. The NRSA is also developing a digital platform to connect motorists with available towing services.

Additionally, the NRSA is advocating for the regulation of daily sales targets imposed on commercial drivers by vehicle owners. Mr. Amaliba argued that excessive financial demands can lead to speeding and reckless driving as drivers attempt to meet high targets through multiple trips. He suggested that regulating these demands, similar to rent control, could reduce the pressure that contributes to road accidents.
