National Security Service addresses Gergana Petrova detention

The National Security Service (NSS) has issued an official statement regarding the detention of Gergana Petrova in Strumyani on August 28, 2026, during a visit by the Prime Minister. The NSS denied allegations that it restricted access for journalists or citizens to the Prime Minister, describing such claims as “manipulative.”

According to the NSS, the individual, who identified herself as a journalist, exhibited behavior that “differed significantly from other citizens and journalists.” The service stated that the individual refused to provide a press card or identification, prompting a request for assistance from Ministry of Interior officers to establish her identity. The NSS maintains that its personnel acted “without conflict and strictly professionally” and that Petrova was able to “freely film and ask questions of the Prime Minister.”

Additionally, MP Demerdzhiev noted that Petrova has reportedly been detained in previous years on suspicion of serious murder.
