National Service Dog Day honors assistance animals

National Service Dog Day, observed annually on September 20, honors the approximately 500,000 service dogs in the United States that assist individuals with physical, sensory, psychiatric, intellectual, or mental impairments. The day was designated by Congress to recognize the vital role these animals play in supporting veterans and people with disabilities.

Service dogs provide essential assistance ranging from physical tasks, such as retrieving dropped items or assisting with balance, to psychiatric support, such as mitigating hyper-vigilance or aiding with sleep disruptions caused by PTSD. Organizations like Hawaii Fi-Do Service Dogs and America’s VetDogs provide training and placement to help recipients reclaim independence and dignity through canine companionship.
