National Society of Family Medicine urges influenza vaccination

The National Society of Family Medicine (SNMF) is urging the population to schedule influenza vaccinations through their family doctors before the virus begins to circulate widely in the community.

SNMF President Dr. Dina Mergeani noted that the vaccine requires approximately two weeks to provide protection, making it essential to act before the onset of an epidemic. She emphasized that influenza is not merely a cold and can lead to pneumonia, hospitalization, or death, particularly among vulnerable groups such as the elderly (over 65), children, pregnant women, and individuals with chronic illnesses.

Dr. Răzvan Miftode, vice-president of the SNMF, highlighted the role of children as primary vectors for spreading the virus. He stated that vaccinating children helps protect the entire family and slows community transmission. Vaccines are currently available in pharmacies, and family doctors are prepared to recommend appropriate options for their patients.
