National Spitfire Monument proposed for Southampton
A proposed National Spitfire Monument in Southampton is nearing a potential breakthrough. The monument, intended to honor Reginald Mitchell, the chief designer at Southampton-based Supermarine, is expected to stand 131 feet tall. If approved, it would be the world’s largest stainless steel structure, standing nearly 20 feet shorter than the Statue of Liberty and twice the height of the Angel of the North.
The project, which began in 2007 through a group of south coast volunteers, is awaiting a final decision from the local authority. If the council grants the necessary permissions and building license at next month’s meeting, construction could proceed in Mayflower Park. The monument aims to celebrate the aviation history of the region, where Mitchell’s designs helped secure the Schneider Trophy.
