National Stock Exchange of India makes market debut on BSE and MSEI

The National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) made its highly anticipated market debut on Thursday, September 24, listing on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the Metropolitan Stock Exchange of India (MSEI). The IPO, which was India’s second-largest public issue following Hyundai Motor India, raised approximately 226 billion rupees (US$2.4 billion). The offering was structured entirely as an offer for sale (OFS) involving 12.64 crore equity shares, meaning the proceeds go to existing shareholders rather than the exchange itself.

Shares listed at Rs 1,800, representing a modest 0.84% premium over the issue price of Rs 1,785. Despite the muted initial listing, the stock saw significant trading activity, with nearly 1 crore shares traded within the first hour. Following the debut, the stock experienced volatility, rising as much as 5% to reach levels around Rs 1,878 before stabilizing. The NSE’s market capitalization was estimated at approximately Rs 4.42 lakh crore to Rs 4.56 lakh crore upon listing.

The IPO saw strong investor interest, with an overall subscription of 5.71 times. Qualified institutional buyers (QIBs) showed the highest demand, with their portion subscribed 12.68 times. NSE Managing Director and CEO Ashish Kumar Chauhan noted that more than 34 lakh retail investors were allotted shares, describing the event as a new beginning for the institution.
