National Synodal Assembly meets in Ireland to shape Church future
Over 300 delegates from across Ireland gathered at Gormanston, Co Meath, for the National Synodal Assembly to discuss the future direction of the Catholic Church in Ireland. The assembly focused on 35 proposals designed to guide Church life, following a renewal process that began in 2021.
The proposals are organized into five key pathways: the Church that proclaims the Gospel, the Church as a community of belonging, the Church as a place of healing, the Church that accompanies, and the Church that empowers for ministry and co-responsibility. Key priorities identified during the process include belonging, co-responsibility and lay ministry, family, formation and catechesis, healing, women, and youth.
A central theme of the discussions involves the role of women and the concept of reciprocity within the Church. The assembly seeks to address questions regarding women in both management and formal ministry, aiming for a process that involves the entire ‘People of God’ without paternalism or subordination.
