National Theatre holds inaugural Creative Summit in Kano
The National Theatre of Nigeria has launched its Creative Summit in Kano, marking the first time the event has been held outside of Lagos. The two-day program aims to decentralize access to resources for the creative economy by providing practitioners with training in financial literacy, funding access, and practical professional skills.
Kano was selected for the summit due to its significant cultural importance and its role as the home of Kannywood, one of Nigeria’s major film industries. Tola Akerele, General Manager and CEO of the National Theatre, stated that the initiative is intended to ensure that artists in Northern Nigeria have access to the same infrastructure and support systems available in other major hubs.
The summit is being conducted in partnership with the Kano State Government, the European Union, and iDICE (Investment in Digital and Creative Enterprises). During the event, sessions were held on topics such as intellectual property, with Audu Maikori emphasizing the importance of proving authorship to protect creative rights.
